I couldn't wait any longer. I just ordered the DX-979 with TG Modulator and SkyThumper ST-65DX microphone. I'm pretty excited about having SSB in the mobile. I never really used SSB before, but since using it on the base station, I can see its benefits. ---------- "... it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go."

My next radio will have SSB, and it will probably be the 979. I was debating getting it with the TG modules, but just don't have the funds right now. I'd love a SS 158 EDX, but can't have a side-mic in my install, and just can't justify spending that kind of dough without having used SSB before. Did you get both TG modules or just the modulator? Let us know how you like the radio when you get it. Enjoy that radio! Handyman

I specifically asked Sparky on the phone this morning about the TG modules. Obviously, he'll do whatever I want him to do, but he recommended getting just the (1) module (the TG Modulator). Since he knows way more than I do about the modules and this radio, that's all I got, based on what he recommended. He did comment that the choice I made for the mic was awesome. Apparrently, it really works well with this radio. ---------- "... it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go."

Can extra channels (uppers and lowers) be added to the 979? ---------- "... it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go."

I believe that "xtra channels" can be added to your 979. If I am not mistaken however, You will need to put switching on the back or side of the radio to accomplish this. This is like the third or fourth time I've heard this ? lately, and it makes me wonder why folks don't just buy a radio that has the capabilities that you want rather than trying to "shoe-horn" all these extras into a lesser radio. It always ends up costing more $$ to piece together a radio a little at as time, and sooner or later you will run into something that CAN'T be upgraded; like making a two-final radio out of a 1 pill.Food for thought. ---------- Keep swingin'... It was just question, no more than that. As far as why not start off like that to begin with, many have their reasons. Some due to chassis size of the exports, others due to the fact that it "can't look like an export" for their application, etc. Adding extras to a stock rig is not the worse thing in the world that could possibly happen. ---------- "... it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go."

Nascar you are so right, my buddy is a truck driver and an export radio is a no, no, at his company, so I set up a Galaxy 959, swing kit and extra channels so he can talk on lower freqs while on the road, he goes north out of the country and has had one radio taken at the border,,,,,,,,but now I run exports, because they are ready to roll, but in some cases as you stated a stock radio fits, and yes you can put extra freqs in a 979, Competition rig: COBRA Blk Chrome 29 SSB rig: 2950DX SSB Rig: on base Magnum 257 Base radio: Lafayette 1140Secret......all by Sparky's Too many more radios to list bopper1_98@yahoo.com

Extra Channels CAN be added to the 979, BUT is is a little more difficult than the 949/959 in terms of the VCO getting the power spread around. This can be done with 2 switches.. OR...there is a way to install a board that will give 40 up and 40 down with no skips. It's a PAIN in the *** to do, but we do them...with some advance warning. The 979 is an exellent radio all around. Sparky OWNER-PART TIME TECHNICIAN-FLOOR SWEEPER

My DX-979 arrived today. Thanks for the gift Sparky. I like this radio, between the backlighting and the nice big meter. Output seems to be nice too. I haven't talked much on it yet, but intend to over the next few days. ---------- "... it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go."

The jury is still out on this one. Meter readings and such aside, this weekend I'm going to try to do some more extensive mid-to-long range testing with my wife on the home base. The 979 is much quieter on the receive side than my 29-HP. What I don't know is if that "quieter" means that I'm not hearing as much as I do on the 29-HD or if the 979 just has a nicer/quieter receive. Transmit wise, the 3 or 4 regulars that I talk to say both radios sound about the same. What's confusing to me (and I know it's probably just a matter of timing, etc.) is that with my 29-HP, on regular basis, I'd get unsolicited flowers. I'd be talking with someone or be giving a bear report and someone out of the blue would key-up and tell me that I was blowing their doors down. I've received none of these type of reports using the 979. Again, it's probably coincidence or something. As far as the amp, yes, I run the RM Italy KL-300P when I need a little extra power. The 29-HP and KL-300P combo is an awesome setup. I've talked skip like I was on the base and I've talked straight-line from Delaware to South Jersey and Philadelphia. I haven't had the opportunity to do any of this type talking with the 979-300P combo yet. I haven't had the chance to do any SSB testing as of yet. ---------- "... it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go."

I don't like leaving threads like this open-ended, so I thought it was time for a follow-up post. In short, I love my DX-979. It's done well on AM and SSB, both stock and in-line with my RM Italy KL-300P. I've made great local contacts and had no issue shooting skip while it was rolling in. The only thing that I'm debating is getting extra channels added. Not that I'd use them all that often, but when the other channels are noisy, I find the others to be somewhat quieter. A half-dozon or so of use locals have "freeband" on the base stations that we use when local noise becomes unbarable. It would be nice to have that in the mobile too. ---------- "... it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go."

"... OR...there is a way to install a board that will give 40 up and 40 down with no skips. It's a PAIN in the *** to do, but we do them...with some advance warning." Sparky, I'm assuming you're referring to the Viagra board? Which existing switch would be used to gain access to the >40 and the <40 channels? ---------- "... it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go."
