Until such time that Cobra dims the brightness of these new blue LEDS in the 29-LTD, I've found a cheap solution that works pretty well, without opening up the case. I went to Pep Boys a bought their least expensive cling-on window tinting, in black with a 20% light passing rate. The exact name of the product is Eclipse Zone Static Cling-On (LIMO 20% LPR). It cost $8 or $9. I cut 2-pieces, one to cling-onto the meter and the other to cling-onto the channel display. It dimmed it pretty nicely in the daylight and I can still see what I need to see. The real test will be tonight, when it get dark. ---------- "... it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go."

You could also cut-to-size a small piece of colored CD case (the flimsy plastic kind) to cover the places needed.. I've heard that works well also.. But let us know how the window tint works... ---------- ..My wheelchair can go from 0 to 6 in 2.7 seconds.. ..I'm 'not' a total idiot yet - some parts are on 'back-order'..

Well, it cut the brightness down significantly, however I'd still like it a bit dimmer. I'm going to try to apply (2) layers and see how that does. The concern there is that I won't be able to see it in the daytime. ---------- "... it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go."

Some folks out there are in the same situation. Love the display but at night this become distracting. I would think the best way is to have a mod done to the dim switch for a lower display than what the factory offers. I e-mailed my contact at Cobra and awaiting an answer. Actually the standard in which they had set "dim" is too high and can be a hazard in certain situations. Some people learn or train their eyes to live with. The tint material is a good idea.

I agree, however I'm trying to "fix" this without sending my radio out to Sparky. I just tried the 2-pieces clinged together and I think that's going to work. I'll know tonight. It's still visible in the daylight. Applying 2-pieces to the meter is too much and doesn't allow you to see the meter in the daylight, so 1-piece on the meter, 2-pieces on the channel display and I think we're set. ---------- "... it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go."

Just as a final update, using 2-plys on the channel selector and 1-ply on the meter seem to do the trick. With the radio on low brightness, it can still be read in the daylight and is very much dimmer at night. I'm considering this a success. I agree that utimately, Cobra has to internally fix this issue. ---------- "... it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go."

I was reading the list of modifications that another CB outfit does. One is connecting a photosensor up to the radio's display. When the sensor detects a bright environment everything self adjusts to full brightness and if the sensor detects low light environment the radio will automatically dim. This modification sounds pretty good if it truely works 100%. When it dims I would wonder if that is enough on these blue displays.

Anyone interested in buying a Dave Made 2x8? I had my tech (Mr. Goose Rider in TX) check and tune, then put it in the closet. Sold my truck and have downsized to a four pill for my car. Can send pics.

Howdy Bulldog. New to the board here! And requested my account be terminated at another message board. In reply to the blue LED dim down, I've also read about the photosensor mod your talking about by the other cb outfit. If it were to work as well as the sensor on my tv that does the same thing, then it would be cool. I have to say though.. that other cb outfit won't get near my radios. I'll just have to wait until Sparky makes it available.(if he decides to) Actually the brightness does not seem to bother me all that much but I agree it is too bright.

Thanks again Bulldog. This is great information. Being the owner of the 29 black chrome with the blue LEDS, I recommend getting this done due the high brightness of the radio in the dark. ---------- "... it's not what you take when you leave this world behind you, it's what you leave behind you when you go."
